Walking Bus – Volunteers Needed for Marino, Donnycarney & Charlemont

Walking Bus – Volunteers Needed for Marino, Donnycarney & Charlemont

What is a Walking Bus?

The Walking Bus comprises two volunteer parents, one to “drive” and one to “conduct” a group of school children walking to school. It is powered by good old-fashioned legwork and follows a set route to school, collecting pupils at “bus stops” on the way.

What are the benefits of a Walking Bus?

  • It provides a safe and environmentally friendly way for children to travel to school
  • Children learn good road sense
  • It encourages children to start the “walking” habit which will hopefully stay with them for the rest of their lives
  • Improved fitness through daily exercise
  • Promotes social development and independence
  • It’s fun
  • Working in a rota parents save time when other people escort their children to school
  • It encourages walking, which, in turn reduces traffic and fumes near the school

WALKING BUS HELP

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are looking for additional volunteers for all of our walking buses.

Our aim is to have two parents each morning leading the bus – one at the front and one at the back and to walk with the group of children to the school.   If you can help out on any day, please could you send a note to Ms Lambe stating the day you are available, your daughter’s name and class and your contact number and we will get in touch with you.

ROTA – We would like to create a rota of volunteers for each of the walking bus routes to ensure that each morning there is an adult (or two) present on the walk to the school.

Marino Walking Bus.

The bus departs every day at 8.40 from the Junction of Marino Park and Fairview Avenue Upper.

Donnycarney Walking Bus

We would like to get the Donnycarney Walking Bus started once again.  The meeting point is at Donnycarney Credit Union on the Malahide Road. The bus should depart each morning at 8.40. Children are welcome to join the walking bus along the route to the school.  Can you help?  Please contact Ms Lambe (room 17) or Ms Butler (room 16) if you can help out.

Charlemont Walking Bus

The Charlemont Walking Bus is a busy bus which meets at the entrance to the Charlemont Housing Estate and departs each morning at 8.45am.  Would you be willing to help out on this bus?  If you are, could you contact Ms Butler (room 16).

Hi-Viz waistcoats are available from Ms Lambe (both for the children and the leaders). Just ask!

Thank you to all of our current volunteers for the reliability, flexibility and enthusiasm!  Very much appreciated.

Happy New Year from the Green School Committee.
